The most common type of work visa, the “Specialist in Humanities and International Services” visa for various international roles such as language teachers, translators/interpreters, international sales, overseas business coordinator, foreign designers and various specialist roles such as marketing, PR, finance, business administration, consultant, etc.
The specific requirements of the candidate will depend on the role (job description) in Japan. Also, the requirements and visa type may vary depending on the company structure, size and the applicant’s work duties in relation to the duties of other members at the same company, so in the end it will be a case by case decision.
However, general qualifications for the applicant (visa subject) are:
- 1. Employee working in an international role (e.g. translating/interpreting, international coordination, import/export, overseas operations, etc.) – 3 years’ work experience in related field which can be evidenced by employment certificates, etc. However, there is an exception for translators/interpreters and language teachers, who are required only to have a bachelor’s degree.
- 2. Employee working in a specialist role requiring special academic knowledge (e.g. finance, legal, business administration, etc.) – (i) Bachelor’s degree in related field, OR (ii) 10 years’ work experience in related field which can be evidenced by employment certificates, etc. (and possible to include years studying in higher education in related field)
- 3. Employee transferred to Japanese entity from an overseas affiliate company – having worked at the overseas affiliate company for at least the most recent one-year period in an engineering or international/specialist role.
In addition to the above, the applicant must receive remuneration that is the equivalent of or higher than a Japanese national in the same position would receive.
